Nowlan Park pitch incursion costs Wexford’s Davy Fitzgerald 8 weeks in the stands

It’s being reported an eight week ban has been proposed by the Central Competition Control Committee to Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald following his pitch incursions in last Sundays Allianz league semi final.

The ban means he won’t be allowed on the sideline for their Leinster quarter final and then against Kilkenny in the Leinster semi final if they win their opening match.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror earlier in the week, Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey suggested there was no way Fitzgerald could get away with his actions on the pitch.

“He obviously felt that Wexford should have been awarded a free and I’d agree with him, but these things happen in games. You can’t run in on the pitch and then get involved with opposition players.”

“I’m no rule book expert but I do know that managers have been banished to the stands for less in the past so it’s difficult to see how Davy can avoid punishment on this one. It clearly needs to be looked at and action taken.”

Tipperary ran out 5-18 to 1-19 winners last Sunday to set up a National Hurling League Division 1 Final against Galway in The Gaelic Grounds, Limerick, this Sunday.

The Wexford boss does have the right to appeal the ban to the GAA. If the appeal fails and Wexford progress through the quarter final, any shouting from Fitzgerald to Brian Cody in on 10 June will be coming from the stands.
