Last week Carlow defender Shane Redmond and current Tinryland player announced his retirement from intercounty football this week alongside his clubmate Paul Broderick.
Debuting for the Barrowsiders in 2008 and playing an incredible 14 seasons in total, Redmond explained to Scoreline why now was the time to step away.
“It had never really crossed my mind before. It was always something that I really wanted to do, and it was always something I was really enthusiastic about. I had no problem getting back training and building towards pre-season competition in January.”
“This year was the first time I asked myself the questions. That was the first sign, I would want to give everything 100% if I was to commit to it. Even the fact I was asking those questions though, was a sign in itself.”
I thought about it a lot, I had good conversations with family and friends and thought now is the right time to leave it”
Speaking with Scoreline Redmond outlined another conversation he had, this time with Carlow Football manager Niall Carew. Speaking of the encounter the Tinryland man said ‘
“Once I told him my decision it was a brief conversation.”
“From his point of view I can understand that because if he has to try and drag lads and pull them along, that is not the way to go forward with the county. If lads have to be begged to play, that is not a good scenario.”
“It was a brief enough conversation, but he was very grateful as I was of him, but it was all on good terms.”
