The Camogie Association have recently published the Player Welfare booklet, Volume 2.

Dr. Siobhan O’Connor,a certified athletic therapist recently teamed up with the association.

The collaborated to produce a booklet that provides useful wellness information for camogie players.

The booklet aims to give young camogie players a solid foundation of movement patterns.

“We really tried to make it sports specific and fun”.

“That’s what we really wanted to stress within the player welfare booklet so that we can keep camogie players engaged and enjoying sport”.

Injury Prevention

The fun approach also applied to the area of injury prevention.

“The best injury prevention program is one that players actually do”.

“Really boring, long winded programs away from what they want to do which is camogie, isn’t going to work”.

Keeping Girls in Sport

“The dropout rates in camogie and other sport is quite high”.

“It needs to be something that coaches are aware of too, not putting focus on player’s weight or fitness or things like that”.

The Athletic Therapist believes that an integrated approach to player welfare is key to keeping girls engaged with sport.

“It’s really important that we focus on being healthy and happy and an overall holistic view of you as a person and not just a camogie player”.

The Player Welfare Booklet can be found here.
