Carefully Selected earns Willie Mullins a 9th Goffs Thyestes Chase win

The locally-trained Carefully Selected has won the 2023 Goffs Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park.

In a pulsating finish, Carefully Selected pushed Dunboyne from the last jump to the finishing post making it a memorable day for trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Paul Townend.

Townend had missed a few winners (unwell) at Fairyhouse on Wednesday but was in form on Thursday to continue his winning ways for the Mullins yard. As for Carefully Selected, almost three years out but for a run at Christmas, it marked a great run and recovery having made a mistake four fences out that caused a few hearts to skip a beat in the stands.

Coko Beach had looked on course for a repeat of 2021’s success but in the end, a photo finish confirmed Carefully Selected, just edging ahead by a nose from Dunboyne under Sam Ewing.
