Carlow Senior Football manager Turlough O’Brien says the greater amount of games for hurlers and footballers in various competitions especially in December and January is unhealthy.

Speaking exclusively to KCLR, Turlough says that extra games on the calendar schedule is creating more pressure on the players….

“There is no doubt one of the big issues in the GAA at the moment is the calendar”

“We now are in a situation in both the Hurling Championships and the Football Championships where we are introducing more games in round robins and Super 8s and talking about two tier competitions and that’s going to create even more pressure on the players which I would be very concerned about”

“December and January are not the best time of the year to be playing football and especially not hurling, it is an issue there is no doubt about that, Eddie Brennan was on the Radio talking about the Laois hurlers playing Fitzgibbon Cup between the first two rounds of the National Hurling League so they are the problems that young players are facing there is no doubt about that, and it’s not healthy”
