Padraig Amond’s remarkable return to Irish football has reached new heights, as the Waterford FC striker has been named in the PFA Ireland Premier Division Team of the Year.
After spending 14 years abroad, Amond returned to his homeland in January and has made an immediate impact, scoring 13 league goals this season and recently extending his contract with Waterford.
Amond’s football journey began at Sligo Rovers before he ventured to Portugal, signing with Paços de Ferreira, where he first showcased his talents on the international stage. His career then took him to England, where he made a name for himself at clubs like Grimsby Town and Newport County, particularly standing out in FA Cup competitions with memorable performances that left an indelible mark.
One of the highlights of Amond’s career came in 2020, when he earned a call-up to Mick McCarthy’s provisional Ireland squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia, a testament to his consistent performances and ability to perform at the highest level.
Now back in Ireland, Amond’s inclusion in the PFA Ireland Premier Division Team of the Year is a fitting recognition of his contributions both on and off the pitch, cementing his status as one of the league’s standout players.
