Old Leighlin are champions once again.

Sunday evening saw the final of the TelLab 2022 Carlow ladies’ senior football championship in Netwatch Cullen Park with familiar foes Old Leighlin going toe-to-toe with Bennekerry/Tinryland.

Defending champions Bennekerry/Tinryland were slow to get out of the traps, the first 20 minutes proving a low-scoring affair with Old Leighlin leading 0-4 to 0-1, Cliodhna Ní Shé’s scoring prowess being missed early on.

By halftime, Old Leighlin were running three points clear with a 0-07 to 1-1 lead and they would keep Bennekerry/Tinryland to that score until the closing five minutes of the game. The damage was done at that stage, Old Leighlin hitting the back of the net around the 52-minute mark to put the icing on the cake and run out eventual 1-12 to 1-04 winners.

Commiserations to our senior team on their defeat to Old Leighlin this evening, our girls were up against it with key players picking up injuries this week. Besides this our girls dug deep and gave everything they had but unfortunately just came up short on the day💛🖤

The result sees Old Leighlin take this year’s senior football crown in Carlow and tees up a trip to the Leinster intermediate club championships in a few weeks time.
