Carlow GAA stalwart Darragh Foley, the county’s all-time leading scorer and second on the all-time appearance list with 160 caps, has officially announced his retirement from inter-county football.
Foley’s decision marks the end of a remarkable 15-year career, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, resilience, and a profound impact on Carlow football.
In an emotional statement posted on his club Kilbride’s social media page, Foley reflected on his journey:
“For 15 years, I have lived out my dream of playing senior football for Carlow GAA. The time has come for me to step aside and let someone else live out that dream. I wish Shane Curran and the lads all the best for the future and I look forward to supporting the lads along the way.”
Foley went on to express his gratitude to his former managers, including Luke Dempsey, Anthony Rainbow, Turlough O’Brien, and Niall Carew, for giving him the opportunity to represent his county. He reserved special mention for Turlough O’Brien, under whom Carlow enjoyed some of their most memorable summers in recent history.
“Turlough, I look back on your tenure with the most fondness as we danced with the big boys in the summers of ’17, ’18,” Foley reminisced, highlighting the pride and joy of those challenging yet exhilarating seasons.
Acknowledging his club, Kilbride, Foley thanked the members for their unwavering support and for instilling a resilient spirit within him. He also paid tribute to his family, especially his parents, who followed his journey across the country, and his wife Shauna, for her sacrifices and steadfast support.
Foley’s retirement statement encapsulated his deep love for the game and his appreciation for the memories and friendships formed during his career:
“15 years with no medals to show for, but memories and friendships made that trump any silverware. Carlow Gaels, thank you.”
Darragh Foley’s retirement marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in Carlow GAA history. His contributions to the county’s football landscape are indelible, and while he may not have amassed medals, his legacy is etched in the hearts of Carlow fans.
As he steps back from the inter-county scene, Carlow GAA and its supporters celebrate a career defined by passion, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the game.
