The Glen Dimplex All-Ireland camogie series gets underway this weekend with Kilkenny and Carlow’s intermediate sides first out of the traps.
They haven’t had much time to recover from their Leinster intermediate championship final – played just last weekend at SETU Carlow – but both counties are out in force and on the road, Kilkenny heading to TU Dublin to take on Dublin in Blanchardstown on Saturday evening while Carlow face a long trip up North to meet 2021 All-Ireland intermediate champions Antrim.
Discussing the games this week, 2016 All-Ireland intermediate winning captain with Kilkenny and KCLR camogie analyst Áine Farrell was asked if Carlow can go to the North and come away with the victory. With Carlow already securing the Division 3A league title this year and pushing all the way to the closing of the provincial championships, form is on their side.
“Do you know what I think they can (get the victory), and I think they’re going to take an awful lot of confidence from the Leinster final as well”, Farrell told co-host Martin Quilty on this week’s podcast.
“In particular, from that first 30 minutes. Listen, they probably know that when Kilkennygot the run on them in the second half of that Leinster final, that’s where they maybe kind of dropped their guard a bit. And I think that they know that they can go toe to toe with a top-class team like Kilkenny, they can certainly do it with any other team in the country.”
“Yes, OK, it’s going to be a tough task having to go up to Antrim. But I think the way Carlow are at the moment, I think if they can get a good victory in their first game, I think that’s going to set them up for the rest of the series.”
Antrim v Carlow throws in at 3pm on Saturday at St. Mary’s Ahoghill, Ballymena and tickets are available here. Listen to the latest helping of Camán Caint below including a full preview of the opening games for the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland camogie championships
