Finn Lynch of Carlow has been chosen by the Irish sailing team to compete in this year’s Olympic Games in Paris, making it his second time to take part in the event.
The 2024 edition will be held in Marseille from 1st to 6th August where he will vie for honors at the Men’s Dinghy category.
Speaking to KCLR last year, Lynch reflected on the uncertainties of his Olympic future beyond Paris, humorously noting the influence of his personal life on his career decisions.
“I have thought about it. I’m not 100% sure if I’m going to do an Olympic campaign. I’m just giving everything I have to this campaign and then I need to reassess and see if my girlfriend will allow me to spend four more years traveling the world,” Lynch said. “I’m sure she will, but yeah no decisions made yet.”
While this was said in jest, these words illustrate how many professionals must manage their careers with personal relationships. For some athletes like Lynch who are determined to compete at the highest levels, they have to think about the support systems closest to them while aiming even farther beyond. It is something I previously covered in the article “You’re good. Get Better.” Success & happiness, whats the trade off?.
Beyond that though Finn also knows that people expect him, as well as staff members within their setup, to deliver medals saying “I know within the performance team that we are here for medals”
