Peter Grogan, a rising star in Irish football, has made a significant career move by joining Austin FC II in the United States. The striker, who had an impressive 2024 season with 21 appearances and seven league goals, has been a key player for his club since signing earlier this year.
Grogan’s transfer to Austin FC II comes after a season where he consistently demonstrated his goal-scoring ability and work ethic. His contributions did not go unnoticed by scouts across the Atlantic, leading to his move to the MLS Next Pro side.
“Peter has been professional throughout this whole process,” said Head of Football Pat Devlin. “He has been excellent for the club since joining earlier this season. We thank him for his time at the club and wish him the very best in his career ahead.”
Grogan’s former club, Crettyard, where he first honed his skills, also expressed their pride in his achievements. “The Club would like to congratulate Peter Grogan on his huge move over to the States. Everyone in the club loves to follow Peter’s journey, and that won’t change—apart from it might mean a few later nights than normal,” they noted. “We are so proud to have been a part of his journey and love the fact that we were able to show that in a small part at our last juvenile awards event. Best of luck, Peter.”
This move to Austin FC II is a significant step in Grogan’s career, offering him the chance to showcase his talent on an international stage. The 21-year-old striker will now look to make an impact in MLS Next Pro, a league known for developing young talents and providing a pathway to Major League Soccer. No doubt he will be seeking the advice of his fellow Irish man Jon Gallagher from Dundalk who also plays at the Texas club.
As Grogan embarks on this new chapter, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Irishman adapts to the American game. His journey from local Irish football to the US professional ranks is a testament to his determination and talent, and his progress will be followed with keen interest both in Ireland and in his new home in Austin.
From a Kilkenny perspective, the marble city did have one player reach Major league Soccer glory! Bryan Byrne was born in Kilkenny and managed to be the 38th drafted player in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. Byrne was apparently being touted to join Los Angeles Galaxy, but a disagreement over his playing position and the signing of David Beckham resulted in the team passing on him. Byrne signed a contract with the Revolution in April 2007 and made his MLS debut against Real Salt Lake in 2007.
