The Galway Races may proceed in July, but only behind closed doors.
The Race Committee will not be able to permit fans at Ballybrit due to the rules around mass gatherings announced on Tuesday of more than 5,000 people not be permitted up until the end of August .
The event was due to start July 27th for seven days infront of a huge crowd as usually the event is regarded as one of the biggest social events in the Irish Calendar. In a statement released by Galway Racecourse general manager , Michael Moloney, they confirmed that full refunds will be made available while also offering hope to race fans that the races may take place regardless.
“It may prove possible to run the Galway Races behind closed doors, dependent on Government policy and the approval of Horse Racing Ireland and Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board. This would be for the benefit of the racing industry, our valued partners and our television audiences at home and internationally. We are currently planning for this scenario and we will update you on progress as and when we can.”
