St. Lachtains clinched the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Junior Hurling Championship title with a hard-fought victory over Windgap, finishing 2-15 to 1-12.

The match saw both teams locked in a tense battle at halftime, but St. Lachtains’ commanding second-half performance ensured their triumph and marked their return to the intermediate ranks.

Speaking to KCLR after the game, St. Lachtains manager Steven Farrell expressed immense pride in his players:

“I’m lost for words,” Farrell remarked. “The work and the effort the players put in over the last year, the last two years since we took over, is just unbelievable.”

Farrell, who shares a deep connection with his team, was visibly elated.

“I went to school with them all, I hurled with them, all the way up. I know these boys inside out, they know me inside out. We just have that bond, that connection with the players.”

The match began with both sides trading scores in a closely contested first half, leaving the teams level at the break. However, St. Lachtains emerged stronger in the second half, seizing control with decisive plays and crucial scores. They ultimately closed the game with a six-point margin, securing the championship title.

Farrell attributed the victory to the team’s unity and focus throughout the season:

“At the start of the year, we said we close all doors, we do us, we do what we do, we don’t worry about anyone else.”

This singular focus proved fruitful as St. Lachtains showcased their dedication and hard work throughout the campaign. Their triumph not only secured the championship but also ensured their promotion to intermediate hurling.

“They [St. Lachtains players] want to drive on, there’s no roof to this,” Farrell added. “Delighted that we got over the line, back up intermediate. I’m absolutely delighted for them; it’s all about them today.”
