One of Ireland’s Olympic medal hopefuls has called for the 2020 games in Tokyo to be postponed.
Former world boxing champion Kellie Harrington says the games need to be rescheduled by organisers, and a decision needs to be made ‘sooner rather than later’.
The International Olympic Committee are said to be considering a postponement, having previously stated the games would go ahead as planned.
Harrington said a postponement would make sense, given the current constraints on athletes.
The Olympic Federation of Ireland say it’s now likely the 2020 games will be rescheduled, following the news that Australia and Canada would be withdrawing their athletes.
On Sunday night, the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic committee became the first nation to officially withdraw from the games which are due to get under way in July.
Their decision has been backed by Australia, with Olympic Federation of Ireland CEO Peter Sherrard saying a rescheduled games now seems “likely”.
