Andriy Shevchenko – AC Milan to Chelsea – £30.8m
Premier League fans were set on red alert when the champions Chelsea confirmed the signing of striker Andrey Shevchenko for a then club record fee in 2006. Shevchenko finished his career with AC Milan with 127 goals in 208 appearances for the club, with a Balon Dor trophy in his back pocket.
Initially the Ukranians arrival unsettled Didier Drogba so much so that he considered leaving Chelsea all together, however assurences from Mouriniho convinced him to stay. That’s where the problem seemed to be, Shevcenko and Drogba both needed to be in each others position to prosper. Rumours that Abramovic was interfering with team selections were afoot, as Shecenko was shoed into the side, even playing one game on the right side of midfield.
Injuries and bad form, would plague the once lethal hitman for his remaining time at Chelsea, not even making an appearance in the 2008 champions league defeat to Manchester United. Subsequently loaned back to AC Milan by then manager Phillipe Scolari as he was deemed surplus to requirements, Shevcenko proved to be a costly mistake.
