Andy Carroll – Newcastle United to Liverpool – £35m
Andy Carroll was the most expensive British player of all time. 35 million pounds was spent to bring the big man in from Newcastle by then manager Kenny Dalglish. Signed on the same day Liverpool lost Fernando Torres to Chelsea and gained Luis Suarez, fans seemed to be very unsure of either player at the time.
Of course every one was to learn of the genius of Suarez very quickly but would soon curse fans who would beat the Kop with the Andy Carrol stick. Registering just six goals in 44 league matches across two seasons, less then he scored in his final six months at Newcastle.
Once Dalglish left and Brendan Rodgers was appointed from Swansea, the writing was on the wall for Carroll. Widely regarded as not being able to fit in with Rodgers style of play with the Northern Irish man once saying “We can’t afford to have that money sat on the bench,”. Carroll was soon shipped out to West Ham, where he had been plagued by injuries before returning back Newcastle
