Marcus Lawler Is Named Track & Field Athlete Of The Year

Carlow sprinter Marcus Lawler says it’s easy to lose your motivation when competitions are being cancelled due to the pandemic.

The St Laurence O’Tooles athlete has been competing in the indoors this season so far but says 2020 was tough going however a few small meets near the end of the year helped him he said.

“I came off of a really good 2019 summer season and I seemed to have a really good indoors season last year and everything was really in check,” said Marcus.

“I picked up a small injury after indoors but I don’t think it would have hindered me too much but when I saw the events getting cancelled last year I did lose my motivation, to be honest, and it was very hard to keep going and keep training at the same intensity without having a goal at the end of it”.

Lawler finished second in the 200m sprint on Saturday last before a fourth-place finish the next day in the 60m race.

With the 200m race not going ahead at this year’s European Indoor Athletics Championships, Lawler will not be travelling to Gdansk in Poland for the 2021 instalment of the competition as his 60m finish was not sufficient for a qualification position.

Meanwhile his clubmate Molly Scott is in action at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Torun which get underway tomorrow.
