Carlow’s greatest players remember the game that will live with them forever.
Penned by John Kelly, the latest in the line of the Herobooks collection celebrating the careers and games of some of the country’s best-loved club and inter-county players at hurling and football is in the wild.
Carlow: Game Of My Life is a walk through many moments in Carlow GAA’s history.
Among those celebrated in the book are Tommy Corcoran, Richie Moore, Willie Quinlan, Simon Rea, Robbie Foley, James Hickey, Marty Kavanagh, Pat Coady, Paddy Quirke, Brian Kelly, Paul Broderick, Brendan Murphy and more.
“I’ve been going to Carlow games for years, football and hurling so to write about Carlow GAA was brilliant for me”, Kelly told Scoreline on the launch of the book.
“The opportunity came up for me to do the Carlow one (with Herobooks) and I absolutely jumped at it. The stories of players in Carlow are as good as any other county. They might not win All-Irelands or anything but there are some great players who have played in Carlow and some of the stories in the book are a testament to that. I’m really looking forward to the launch coming up and for genuine Carlow GAA people to read it.”
“Maybe the sunshine supporters will think that GAA is all about All-Ireland finals but it’s far from that. I talked to 30 players in this from the 1960s up to the modern day and it’s amazing the players from the 60s to now. Some of them talk about training and the differences in training, the commitment from then to the commitment they put in now. But in talking to the players, every single one of them is doing it for the enjoyment, and for Carlow.”
“I could have done another four or five books of Carlow players but tried to narrow it down to thirty. To try get across both codes, each team from each decade across the way, hopefully, I’ve done that and spread it out across the county.”
