A 0-13 to 1-05 defeat by Cork in the second round of the All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie Championship went somewhat under the radar on Saturday evening as the trip to Pairc Ui Rinn proved too much for John Scott’s side.
Following an opening round win against Kildare, a much-improved display would have been expected on Leeside but it never materialised as Kilkenny looked flat and devoid of ideas in damp conditions.
They will face Derry on Saturday afternoon in Freshford in what is now a crucial game for their prospects of getting out of a tough group.
Kilkenny manager John Scott looked ahead to that tie and reflected on a miserable evening for his team after the loss to Cork.
He said: “We didn’t convert the possession we did have. Our heads dropped near the end of the first half and we were chasing the game from then.
“We performed well defensively and even though our forwards worked hard we never seemed to get a break of the ball. I can’t criticise the effort of the team. It just wasn’t to be for us today.
“We are going to have to regroup and come again. We need to convert our chances when we get them and Cork seemed to win all of the fifty-fifty balls.
“We were working on it in training and it’s very disappointing. All we can do is get back into training and refocus because it was disappointing today.
“It doesn’t get any easier. We will face Derry at home next. We’ll knuckle down and try and improve for next week.
“I can’t say exactly where it went wrong but our recycling of the ball was disappointing too. If we can get our supporters out for the game in Freshford next Saturday at 3pm then we can get a positive result.”
