Kilkenny got their first win in Division 2 of the National Camogie League on Saturday after they defeated Lois by 1-10 – 0-07 in John Locke Park on Saturday afternoon.
Laois started the better of the two sides with centre forward Aimee Collier punishing Kilkenny for ill-discipline as she disposed of a close range free after 27 seconds to give the away team an early lead.
Kilkenny responded well Thomastown forward Eva Hynes scoring three consecutive points. An impressive point from 48 metres was sandwiched between two frees as the home side moved ahead on a score of 0-03 – 0-01 after ten minutes.
John Desmond’s side wrestled back control of the game as their quality free taking came to the fore. Centre back Clodagh Tynan used the wind to her advantage as she pointed from the Kilkenny ’65 and Collier struck soon after to level the game once again.
Kilkenny moved up the gears as the game progressed with Sarah Crowley and Therese Donnelly points from play giving the home side a two point lead. Crowley then scored the first goal of the game as she ruthlessly dispatched to the net as the gap widened between the two teams.
Laois refused to give in however, as another Aimee Collier free alongside their first point from play Jessie Quinlan left a goal between the sides at half time, 1-05 – 0-05.
Points from play Aoife Prendergast and Aisling Curtis further cemented Kilkenny’s control over the game. Laois replied with an Aimee Collier free and battled throughout the half despite playing against a strong breeze.
O’Loughlin Gaels star Laura Greene added a long range point for Kilkenny and another free from Eva Hynes pulled the Kittens ahead on a scoreline of 1-09 – 0-06.
Aimee Collier and Ciara Phelan exchanged points late in the game as Kilkenny ran out convincing winners, 1-10 – 0-07.
