Kilkenny United & Galway clashed at a wet United Park in Thomastown in the Women’s National League over the weekend.
Both sides were in search of their first points of the season and were on the attack from the start and Kilkenny took the lead in the 14th minute when Carla McManus scored from a free kick.
Galway were nearly level in the 20th minute through Elle O’Flaherty but her effort came back off the post.
They were rewarded with an equaliser when Aislinn Meany put the ball in the back of the Kilkenny net.
Both teams attacked strongly after that and Kilkenny were close to getting back in the lead when Carla saw her shot hit the crossbar and come back out, but The half ended at 1-1.
Galway started the 2nd half the stronger and Sadbh Doyle thought she had given Galway the lead on two occasions but had her goals ruled out for offside.
Kilkenny were creating a few chances of their own but the Galway defence stood strong.
A draw seemed on the cards until the 80th minute when Aoife Thompson got on the end of a Tessa Mullins pass through the midfield and finished to the net and that proved decisive.
Next up for Kilkenny United is an away trip to Cork City.
