By Tommy Murphy
Playing their third game in a week Carlow had Louth on the rack for long periods in the O’Byrne Cup at Dowdallshill Louth yesterday.
Paul Broderick pointed for Carlow inside of thirty seconds and for the next ten minutes Carlow had to withstand sustained Louth pressure that yielded only a point.
Trailing by two points midway through the first half Carlow were coming more in to the game. A ball in from Paul Broderick saw Darragh Foley rise high to catch and then a push in the back on the Kilbride man saw Carlow earn a penalty which John Murphy blasted to the net.
Carlow led by 1-6 to 0-7 at half time.
On the restart Louth turned a two point deficit into a two point lead inside of six minutes their goal coming from John Bingham and they were three points clear by the tenth minute 1-10 to 1-7.
Carlow rose to the occasion a well worked Darragh Foley goal restored the lead 2-9 to 1-11.
The Barrowsiders held the lead until the closing stages when a mistake saw Anthony Williams kick Louth’s second goal and the lead. Carlow tried hard in the remaining minutes but could not break down a stubborn Louth defence
