Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes appeared in court before Judge Dermot Sheehan, where he received a two-year suspended sentence for two counts of violent disorder stemming from incidents occurring in October 2019.
The judge emphasized that an immediate custodial sentence would not be appropriate in this case, citing Hayes’ remorse and acknowledging his substantial culpability in the events.
As part of the sentencing, Hayes was ordered to pay carpenter Cillian McCarthy €10,000 in compensation, with the deadline set for September 30th.
Limerick hurling manager John Kiely personally appealed to Judge Sheehan for leniency, advocating for Hayes to be given a second chance despite the charges against him.
Hayes defense council stated, “He does not accept that he was guilty of any attack or administering any violence to Mr McCarthy on the street. This was an isolated aberration in an otherwise blameless life for a young man who has contributed enormously to society.”
