There was a busy weekend of boxing in the National Stadium for lovers of the sport to savour as the National Junior Cadet Championships took place.

Marble City Boxing Club had three participants as they took on the best that the country has to offer in their respective grades.

Speaking about the event on KCLR’s Full Time, Garry Kehoe of Marble City Boxing Club broke down how each of the boxers performed in Dublin.

He said: “We had another phenomenal weekend at the National Stadium.

“We were at the National Junior Cadet Championships which act as a qualifier for the European Championships in Turkey in August. We entered three boxers – Tommy Fitzpatrick, Josh Dowling and Cian Stapleton. “

“Tommy and Josh were unfortunate to lose on split decisions in their finals. It was only a toss of a coin and it was tough to take.

“Cian won his second national title in as many months and he qualified for Turkey in August which is just incredible.

“Your heart sinks when you hear that it’s a split decision. It’s in the lap of the gods at that stage.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get the rub of the green but the two lads learned so much and defeated national champions on their way to the final. It’s hard to take but they’ll be back because they train their socks off.”

“Cian will be based with the High Performance Unit every weekend now in preparation for the European Championships. He’ll train hard for that and then he can look forward to competing in August.”
