We are used to hearing from the County’s Footballers, Hurlers and managers when it comes to the GAA, however there is lots going on behind the scenes when it comes to keeping the county going and organising various initiatives and events.
Ronan Dempsey was appointed the Operations Manager of Carlow GAA just over a year and five months ago and has been tasked with the continuing development of the County GAA both on and off the field and running the county board affairs on a daily basis
It’s an exciting time for Carlow GAA with lots coming down the tracks this year with one of the highlights being the hosting of GAA Congress in February.
The event is taking place in the Mount Wolseley Hotel in Tullow on February 26th and 27th and is the first time ever in 90 years to be hosted by Carlow. Fourty Four stewards have been trained up to the highest Croke Park standards for the event and it will be all hands on deck for the event.
The Carlow Colts is also busy in training and will do their final training session for this group on Friday February 12th. The county board set up the talent academy and over the last few years has become an exclusive group. If players work with their clubs and if they shine, Carlow GAA staff will scout them and bring them in to the Colts set up where they go to IT Carlow for strength and conditioning courses and get the training gear. They also do speed, football and hurling skills.
Also on the horizon is the possibility of Netwatch Cullen Park getting floodlights. An announcement should be made on that in the coming weeks.
The 1916 celebrations are also approaching and Carlow GAA are planning to recreate the finals of 1916 in the county in Netwatch Cullen Park on the 2nd of April. The event will be held in conjunction with Carlow Museum, Club Carlow and other celebrations taking place around the town. It’s a free event and starts with a march from Dublin Street in Carlow which will be turned back into 1916 up to the county grounds.
