Carlow’s senior footballers will make Division 3 their home for 2019.
A win over Antrim in March after a terrific showing in Division 4 of the National Football League secured promotion for the county’s footballers in over 30 years.
Now, senior boss Turlough O’Brien says the main aim for their forthcoming spring campaign is to consolidate their place in Division 3.
Speaking to KCLR at last weeks Carlow Sports Panel launch in Sheehy’s Motors, O’Brien says they will use the League to develop younger players and build a platform going forward.
“Division 3 is a bit of a step up from Division 4 [of the National Football League]”, said O’Brien on Friday’s live show.
“Realistically if you look at the make up at the Division, there are five teams from Leinster in it – Laois, Carlow, Westmeath, Offaly, Longford, Louth – and Sligo and Down. I think we take it match by match, we will see where it takes us.”
“Obviously our first step is to stay up in Division 3 and try and build some kind of a platform for the county going forward that some new players coming in will play at a higher level and get used to it.”
“That will develop to a higher standard on a consistent basis.”
O’Brien and senior hurling counterpart Colm Bonnar were both ratified in September as county managers for 2019 following successful campaigns in both codes.
