Paulstown’s Darren O’Neill says it was a last-minute decision to fight in the National Senior Elites competition this year.
He won the national cruiserweight title at the weekend, despite a long time out of the ring before the tournament.
It’s Darren’s eighth national title and he told Full Time here on KCLR that they’re very hard-won.
“Yeah we are absolutely delighted because we’ve competed in a lot of them at this stage but we know just how hard they are to win,” said Darren.
“It was my fifth time entering the elites that I actually won my first one, so I know just how precious they are and we were delighted to get the win”.
“It’s been a horrible two years so I think it’s nice, the club has started back in Paulstown this week so it’s a nice little incentive for the kids, something they can aspire to”.
Darren O’Neill says he’s considering a return to the Irish senior boxing team.
At 36, O’Neill is the oldest ever Irish champion and the 2012 Olympian is mulling over the chance to go to the World Championships.
