Reaction: What fans and players have been saying about the retirement of Brian Cody

After 24 seasons pacing the sidelines with Kilkenny’s senior hurlers, a statement from Kilkenny GAA just before 2pm on Saturday confirmed what had been well-rumoured during the week – Brian Cody was stepping down as manager.

If it hasn’t already been explored behind the scenes, the search is very much on now for a new senior hurling boss for the Cats, the first managerial appointment this century.

8,650 days on from his appointment in November 1998, Cody gets to hang up his fabled Glanbia hat and presumably spend more time soaking up hurling as a fan without needing to have an eye on the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

The on air reaction has been huge across Saturday and into Sunday, Scoreline alone fielding hundreds of comments in the minutes following the announcement. But what of those reacting online, former players, fellow managers past and present and hurling fans alike?

Here’s a taste…

Reaction to Brian Cody’s retirement

I got to live a dream & play for Kilkenny

Brian was the best manager I have ever seen. He was always able to set the standards year on year with a great ability to get the most out of players. Was a privilege to play for the boss. He has left @KilkennyCLG in the best possible position for the future. #BrianCody

Brian cody. Where do you want your statue ???

Hard to believe that Brian won’t be managing the @KilkennyCLG team next year. Lucky enough to have hurled for him for a decade and learned so much. End of an era. #briancody #GAA pic.twitter.com/m66S1fDXDp

One of the very very lucky ones to have witnessed Brian Cody up close in action. His passion and love for Kilkenny hurling is unparalleled. Honoured to have been managed by the greatest Manager ever #BC

His achievements speak for themselves but one of the things I most admire about Brian is his humility in victory or defeat. He was also always great to deal with after matches win lose or draw be it the Walsh Cup Final or All-Ireland Final. #BrianCody https://t.co/Jw8lfnH58X

Congrats to Brian Cody on the wonderful memories he helped to create as a player & manager with Kilkenny. A freeman, a giant among us, a living legend, a true gael, will be remembered for his successes, that will never equalled. Thank you for your service. Cill Chainnigh Abú 🖤🧡 https://t.co/oGjOjU94dq

All Ireland Football Final tomorrow but the whole country & GAA World will be talking about a Hurling man today…one Mr. Cody…Suffered at his hands a few times…he is the benchmark for success and the GAA world will never see his likes or his records again.

Brian Cody was appointed Kilkenny manager two weeks before the Dreamcast was released.

Kids these days don’t know what life before Cody was like. Or that it even existed.

We’ll never see the likes of Brian Cody ever again.

As a hurling fan, I’m devastated.

As a Wexford fan, I say thanks be to god for that.
