With freezing fog taking hold over Kilkenny and Carlow across the weekend and right into today, let’s take a look at some of the headlines making the sports news for KCLR and Scoreline.ie on a fresh Monday morning.
There will be plenty of cause to celebrate in the Kilkenny City Harriers camp this week with Shay McEvoy (U23 men) and Aoibhe Richardson (senior women) helping team Ireland to medals at this year’s European Cross Country Championships, held in Italy on Sunday. Hannah Kehoe finish 72nd overall in the women’s U20 event while Peter Lynch was best of the Irish and 15th overall in the men’s senior event. Read more details here.
All roads lead to Croker
When it comes to Gaelic games, we’ve got two trips to Croke Park to look forward to this weekend as James Stephens and Ballyhale Shamrocks head to GAA headquarters with the club championship season drawing to a close.
The Village had a good win over Castlegar of Galway on Saturday to set up an All-Ireland camogie club intermediate final against Down’s Clonduff at Croke Park on Saturday, that game coming with a 4.15pm throw-in. The Shamrocks will be there on Sunday to take on Munster champions Ballygunner, a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland final, for a place in January’s senior decider. Throw-in there is at 3.30pm and tickets for both games are available online and from usual Centra and SuperValu outlets.
In Kilkenny, a raft of changes are expected at the Kilkenny GAA convention tonight with O’Loughlin Gaels as the host venue after two years of meeting online. Wingap’s Jimmy Walsh will be departing his role as county chair after five years in the position while a number of other key roles are to be decided heading into 2023.
In Carlow, all U20 championship fixtures were scrapped over the weekend due to the weather with games now set to take place this Friday night between Tinryland and the Netwatch Training Centre in Fenagh.
All-weather to the rescue
Weather conditions at the weekend meant just two of the junior soccer games in Kilkenny and Carlow could go ahead thanks to all-weather pitches at the Watershed and Kells Road.
Castlewarren continued their winning ways with a bumper haul of goals against Thomastown United B on Sunday morning while Evergreen 46 played out a goalless draw with East End, bringing a close to the men’s game in Kilkenny until January.
Camán Caint goes live, again
With James Stephens taking to Croke Park this weekend, we’ll have a special All-Ireland final preview podcast recording live at the club tonight (Monday) for release on Tuesday as hosts Martin Quilty, Aine Fahey and the team talk to players and management ahead of Saturday’s showdown.
And at lunchtime today, we’ll be finding out who takes top honours for the month of November for the David Buggy Motors Kilkenny Sport Star award.
