Seani Maguire from Kilkenny has re-signed with Cork City, marking a significant return to the club where he previously enjoyed remarkable success.
Maguire last played for the Leeside outfit in 2017, during which he scored over 50 goals, including the decisive winner in the 2016 FAI Cup final. His outstanding performance caught the attention of international clubs, leading to his transfer to Preston North End in England. Maguire made history by becoming the first Kilkenny man since Matt O’Mahony in the 1930s to play for the Republic of Ireland international squad.
Following his time at Preston, Maguire played for Coventry City and Carlisle United.
Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, Maguire expressed his enthusiasm about his return: “I am absolutely thrilled to be coming back to City. I had such an amazing spell at the club here before going to Preston, and I have always wanted to come back. I’ve been speaking with the club over the last few weeks, and I have been really impressed by the plans the club has to build towards getting back to where a club of this size should be. There are some really good players at the club, some really exciting young players, and I hope that I can use my experience to help them to achieve their potential.”
Maguire’s return to Cork City is part of a broader trend of players reconnecting with the League of Ireland. Another former Evergreen alumnus, versatile 33-year-old midfielder Jimmy Keohane, has also made a return, signing with Galway United from Rochdale. This trend highlights the appeal of the League of Ireland and the commitment of experienced players to contribute to its growth and success.
As Maguire re-joins Cork City, fans are eager to see if he can replicate his previous success and help steer the club back to its former glory.
