On a great weekend for local sport Carlow athlete Tommy Payne from Tinryland Athletic club kept the flag flying when he won the silver medal in the 3000 metres at the European Masters indoor track and field championships in Madrid on Monday.
The legendary Carlow distance runner was competing in the M60 grade and he clocked 10 minutes 3 seconds for the 15 lap event at the Gallur Sports centre in the Spanish capital.
In a field of 31 runners he finished less than 3 seconds behind the Swedish winner Tore Axelsson and 7 seconds ahead of the bronze medalist Jukka Kauppila of Finland.
