St Leonard’s NS Dunnamaggin have been crowned All Ireland Spikeball Champions.
370 teams entered the competition this year and 16 boys, 16 mixed and 16 girls teams competed for national glory at UL St Leonards had two teams in the nationals.
Their mixed team won their first three matches but were beaten in the knockout round. The boys powered on, beating Clerihan to reach the quarter final, beat Doon to get to the semi final and beat Dromclough to make the final. They had watched last year as 6th class were beaten in the final and were determined to go one further.
Standing in their way was Templemore who are past winners. A Kilkenny v Tipp final. St Leonard’s won the first set and started the second well.
However, Templemore rallied and it was point for point until St Leonard’s smashed a couple of points to go ahead. The finish line was in sight , the magic number was reached, whistle sounded, St Leonard’s had won
