In a country not exactly known for its ice hockey prowess and a city more known for its love of hurling above all else, Kilkenny Storm continue to punch above their weight.
Last week saw a trio of players plus coaches depart for Fussen, Germany for this year’s IIHF Development Cup.
Zac Cummins, Alec Young and Damian Roche were on the ice in Fussen for Kilkenny Storm, opening their cup competition against Liechtenstein.
Young was twice on the scoresheet in that game but Ireland would fall to a 7-6 defeat in a fast-paced encounter.
Two games would follow on Thursday, Young again opening the scoring for Ireland in a 7-6 win over Algeria, repeating the feat against Andorra, this time coming from 6-4 down to close the game out 6-6.
A 3-3 draw against unbeaten Colombia sent Ireland through to a final game against Portugal knowing the winner would take home third place.
Ireland started quick out of the traps, hitting four unanswered goals before Portugal found their groove, closing out the first period of play 5-3.
With Portugal struggling to maintain the pace, Ireland pressed on with another three goals in the second period and four in the third to wrap up 12-4 winners and finish with the bronze medals.

Also at the weekend, Kilkenny Storm’s Under 13s finished their National Inline League at the top of the table, going unbeaten in the league.
