The final of the Scoreline.ie shield takes place tonight in Carlow

Tonight, the inaugural Scoreline.ie shield will come to its conclusion. The final is set to be played between Carlow side Mill Celtic and Kilkenny side Newpark.

Both sides competed in Leinster action last weekend. It was an unfortunate day for Mill Celtic as they lost 5-0 to Killester Donnacarney. Newpark needed extra time to defeat Balrath FC to advance to the last 16, with goals coming from Jenny O’Keeffe, Ria Lawson, and a brace from Amy Clifford.

Newpark are, as of yet, undefeated in the league, with their only dropped points coming against third-placed Crettyard, in a thrilling 5-5 draw. However, Mill Celtic will take solace in the fact that Rachel Whelan, the top scorer of the competition, will be eager to add to her goal tally, which stands at eight.

We caught up with Brian O’Reilly, Carlow District League secretary ahead of the final to get his thoughts; speaking to Scoreline he said:

“It’s been fantastic, the idea behind it was with the camogie going on and the delays of the season, we were struggling to get the women’s teams going. “

“So it was suggested we come up with an idea. Thankfully you (Scoreline.ie) came on board as sponsors, which allowed us to run the competition.  So we bought a brand new shield which will be presented on the night.”

“We’re looking forward to a very exciting game as these two teams should be very close, it’s a really hard one to call.”

The game kicks off tonight, Wednesday the 15th at 7.30pm in The Meadows Graiguecullen (St Pats Boys pitch).
