Diego Costa is now a free agent. Free to sign for whatever team he likes after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with his former employer Athletico Madrid. Rumours of Arsenal and Wolves as likely destinations make sense, especially considering the lack of a transfer fee. A few other players could be on the free agent market at the end of the season. Here is a list looking at some of the best players to be got in July for free.
Lionel Messi
After all the discussion last Summer, Messi decided to stay at the Nou Camp. The clock seems to be ticking though on his time at Barcelona. Recent praises of Manchester City boys Pep Guardiola has seen him linked with the blue side of Manchester, but he has also been linked with David Beckhams Inter Miami team, aswell as Inter Milan and PSG. Weather he goes or stays, ( Presidential candidate Juan Laporta seems to think he will stay) this will be the biggest transfer of the Summer
Sergio Aguero
One , if not thee greatest striker of the Premier League era. 180 goals in 267 appearances, one of those goals being a title clincher. Its unfathomable that Manchester City will allow this to happen. Especially with the side struggling for goals this season while he is injured. Pep Guardiola and Sergio Aguero sometimes dont seem to be on the best of terms, so this will be an interesting development over the next few months. Eric Garcia , however looks set to re-join Barcelona after refusing a new contract at man City.
Sergio Ramos
After signing in 2005, Sergio Ramos has went on to become a Real Madrid and Spanish legend, winning everything there is to win with his teams. At 34 his career is winding down, just like his contract which expires in July. Luka Modric is also a crucial player for Los Blancos, who is in the last few months of his contract. Manager Zidane is though to want to keep both players at the club next season as clubs begin circling in January. One Madrid player who looks set to leave on a free is Lucas Vázquez, with the 29 year old weighing up options for every corner of the globe
Edison Cavani
New signing Cavani joins a list of Manchester United players out of contract at the end of the season. Notable names like Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Sergio Romero and Marcus Rojo will all most likely need to search for a new club. Cavani however has impressed in his short stint at Old Trafford so far and a new deal is likely. He will be free to speak to other clubs in January if he so wishes, however with Ideon Igalho heading back to China, United will be keen to announce either an incoming striker or an extension for the Uruguayan.
Gianluigi Donnarumma
Mino Raiola is the Italians showstoppers agent, yes that Mino Raiola who is causing such a fuss with pundits. Probably tells you how well the goalkeepers contract talks with AC Milan are going. At just 21, Donnarumma is one of the brightest prospects in world football. in a season where AC Milan may win their first title in 10 years, Donnarumma’s value has never been higher. Both Inter Milan and Juventus are apparently interested in the Italian No.1, while Spurs are also apparently targeting the man who made his debut in goal at just 16.
David Alaba
One of the most versatile players in the world David Alaba will be available on a free transfer come July 1st. The 28 year old could walk into any team in the world and Bayern Munich are letting him walk away for free. Apparently the German powerhouse removed their contract offer for the Austrian which has raised a few eyebrows. Munich are always known as a side that will want to keep their best players , one has to look at the transfer of Owen Hargreaves , Bastain Schweinsteiger and Thiago as instances where players suffered with injury problems after leaving the club. Still regardless ever top team would be better off with Alaba in their side. Fellow clubmate Jerome Boateng also looks set to leave to club on a free after signing from Man City in 2011.
Georginio Wijnaldum
Barcelona were making the most noise about signing the Dutch midfielder affectionately know as Gini. A hit on Merseyside after his Newcastle switch in 2016. Establishing himself as a critical component of Jurgen Klopps Liverpool, he may be seeking a deal worthy of his senior club status. We have seen in the past that deals can be worked out even after the contract expiry! Liverpool fans will be hoping they can entice him to stay, but that may depend on Messi leaving Barcelona, freeing up wages to possibly offer potential players better salaries.
Memphis Depay
A failed transfer to Barcelona in the Summer never materialized for the Dutch international, however a cut price January deal is not off the cards. The former Manchester United player is reportedly available for just five million euros, as Lyon hope to recoup something for the 26 year old they bought in 2017. A reunion at the Nou Camp with former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman seems most likely, however apparently Liverpool are weighing up a move should he become a free agent.
Angel Di Maria
Angel Di Maria could be set to leave the French Capital along with Julian Draxler following him out the door. Neither look likely to be coming to the Premier League with Germany being the most realistic place for Draxler to land. Meanwhile Di Maria will have a world of options available to him, including an extension after being to integral to PSG’s Champions League charge. Left back Juan Bernat is also free to speak to clubs come january first
Other notable names include Johny Evans and Demari Gray from Leiciester City, Benteke, Sakho and Townsend from Crystal Palace, Saiss from Wolves, Mustafi from Arsenal, Florian Thauvin a right winger from Marseille, AC Milans Hakan Calhanoglu, Romas Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Napolis Arkadiusz Milik.
Not a bad side to be got on a free!
