Week 1 : Training with Davy Jones

So here we are again, week one of another ten week course. So I guess that makes it week 11, right?

To be honest I am buzzing for it, I’m upping my running every week and upping the kgs on the bars aswell. Speaking of bars, it was hard to stay away from them on St. Patricks weekend. It would be rude not to! I had a belter of a time, sure why not! Probably counterproductive, sinking calorie heavy Guinness and all the bad food that comes along with it. There are times in life you just have to say f*ck that and just enjoy life…..and that I did. There was five sessions in total this week, three in the gym and two in the town.

Session One :

I got two runs in early in the week, down in park, pure loving life. I wake up early now everyday, think it sets you up for the day. The back pain had subsided to something more manageable, so I was raring to go. Chest and back was on the agenda for today, however we flipped the script. We started the chest session on incline, supersetting some rows for the back in there. By the time we rolled around to flat bench I was tapped. It was a nice way to shock the muscles, throwing a bit of time under tension sets in. I felt good afterwards, my chest definition has probably been the most improved thing I have noticed over my time with the folks in Davy Jones. I was always conscious of my “man boobs”, so thankfully they have a bit more shape, and that all comes from tough sessions like Tuesdays one with Vinnie.

Session Two :

Davy took todays session, still conscious of putting my back under pressure. We did some free squats into lunges. I have been surprised by the improvement in lunges, I kid you not, any weighted lunges I did before always resulted in pulling my hamstring. Not today, all though at stages you would be hoping for a pulled hammy just for an excuses to drop out. There is just something about leg day that mentally tests you ever time you do it. Ultimately it becomes an accepted fact that each rep is a battle, then you add time under tension, four seconds down, three seconds up on leg press, the only thing you can do is put yourself in a happy place. Honestly the relief felt after each time under tension leg press set was comparable to sex. Just taking that strain off the legs, trying to stand and feeling the blood rush around your body like a F1 car zippin around a track, felt otherworldly. Little blue dots appeared in my vision, my head was in the clouds, was I actually dying? Its this what going to the light feels like? No probably not, it is just F’N leg day.

Session was not over either, Vinnie came strutting over and started dropping down challenges between myself and two other guys training in the gym. Baz , Murf and I were tortured with dropset hamstring curls all leading up the Prowler. I have mentioned the prowler before, essentially a weighted sled push. Now this time there was competition. Up and back with the prowler until we could not move anymore. Each one of us shouting the other on, encouraging and pushing each other until we could go no more. My legs collapsed underneath me at one stage, pure exhaustion. In fairness to Baz, he finished each set, with tremendous pace and won out, but I feel with that kind of workout, we all won.

Session three :

So Thursday was a day to celebrate St. Patrick and Friday was a day of rest. Saturday was a different animal, starting the day off with a 6k run, I was amped and ready to rock a shoulder and arm session. Catherine was on hand to push me through the day. i had only worked with Catherine the once before, but it is always fun getting to pick the brain of a different instructor. It was a tough session, light weight high reps. It’s mad struggling to lift weights that should be a doddle, Shoulders and arms were well and truly burnt by the time I walked out that day, and it set me up nicely for the night ahead. St. Patrick demanded another celebration in his honour that night, and celebrate I did.
