It was a busy weekend across Carlow Kilkenny as the ElectroCity FIFA 20 European Championships kicked off online.
Between Friday and Sunday we had games played in groups A, B and C.
Friday was the opening game of the tournament with Mick Gavin’s Italy getting a nice 2-1 win over Daniel Nolans Turkey.
Then on Saturday, Wales with Jamie Kavanagh suffered a big loss to Switzerland through Mateusz Zych, the game finished up 3-0.
Paul Bergin’s Finland inflicted a heavy defeat on Denmark with Caiman Brennan at the helm, the Scandinavian neighbours winning out 4-0.
While Belgium and Billy Hayes picked up a 4-2 win over Russia guided by our own Shane O’Keeffe (late replacement due to a withdrawal).
On to Sunday and it was not a good day for England under the eye of Theo Drennan when they were hammered 7-1 by Deavon Kelly’s Greece.
Austria also suffered a big loss as David O’Neill’s side went down 5-1 to Cian Kelly’s Hungary.
The game between the Netherlands and Northern Ireland was a bit tighter though as Brian Walsh’s side won out 3-2 against Michael Corcoran’s Netherlands, the game throwing up the first penalty we’ve seen in the tournament so far.
