This Saturday KCLR Scoreline will be at John Locke Park, Callan where Mullinavat can book a place in the intermediate football championship semi-finals with a win over Shandonagh of Mullingar.
A late goal from substitute Padraic Gahan made sure Mullinavat advanced from the quarter-final a 2-06 to 1-07 win against Bracknagh.
Mullinavat captain Michael Malone caught up with Robbie during the week to talk about their county championship victory, their run in the Leinster championship, the disappointment of a quarter-final exit in the hurling championship, and the junior football All-Ireland success with Kilkenny where Malone was captain.
One of the main topics of conversation was the delay between the county’s final victory against Thomastown and the Leinster clash with Brackanagh, as football stepped aside for hurling. Malone, who grabbed the first goal in the Bracknagh game, admitted that preparation was hard due to the small ball fixtures;
“It is hard to prepare because when the football was over five months ago, it was all hurling. We did not go back playing football until we were knocked out of the hurling championship.”
“One positive is you are always going to be fit after the hurling, it was not like we were sitting around. We always had fitness on our side. It was just key for the two or three weeks before the first round, just to get the ball work back in and get back to speed on that situation.”
