Jerry Kiernan says it’s complete nonsense for people suggesting that the top Gaelic Football and Hurlers are amongst the greatest sportspeople that have ever lived.
Speaking to KCLR ahead of the start of the European Athletic Championships tomorrow, Jerry says that sports like Athletics and Swimming are not getting the recognition they deserved.
“The biggest sport in the country is local, but that’s a cultural thing, it’s what the writers write about, it’s what people read about, it’s what people believe and accept that these are the greatest sportspeople of all time which of course is nonsense. It’s not just athletes, you’ve got the swimmers as well.
You would really feel sorry for them because nobody trains as hard as them and when they have any amount of success at all, it is never documented. There is no radio station calling them in for their opinion on how they got on.”
