Details have been announced today of a new student sport scholarship programme at IT Carlow GAA.

Carlow GAA will invest in two new GAA scholarships, one each for hurling and football, to support the education of talented athletes currently attending or due to attend Institute of Technology Carlow who are playing intercounty in either sport with Carlow.

Separately, Carlow Camogie and Carlow Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) will also invest in a new scholarship to aid athletes playing intercounty camogie or ladies gaelic football.

Scholarship support for athletes

The Carlow GAA scholarship will provide financial support for one year, up to the value of €1,000 to assist training needs or course fees.

In addition to financial support, the new GAA scholarships will also include: mentoring; health suite membership and access to the high performance strength and conditioning gym at the Institute; sports rehabilitation support; individualised nutrition support; strength & conditioning, individualised academic support and Institute of Technology Carlow branded sportswear.

The scholarship is open to high performing students who represent Carlow GAA, Carlow Camogie and/or Carlow LGFA and Institute of Technology Carlow in intercounty and intervarsity competitions.

Applicants must be a current Institute of Technology Carlow student or have been successfully offered a place for the new academic year.

“The Carlow GAA scholarships have been introduced to enhance the competitiveness and success of Carlow, while also supporting the education of our players and complements our very successful partnership with Institute of Technology Carlow”, says Carlow GAA chairperson Sean Campion.

Continuing partnership

Institute of Technology Carlow was announced as the new partner of Carlow GAA in January.

The partnership, which runs for up to three years, includes collaboration on the delivery of community and education programmes catering for all age groups from underage to senior and the Institute logo is carried on all jerseys.

Institute of Technology Carlow has also partnered with Carlow Ladies Football and Camogie to provide facilities for coach education, training and a number of National League matches.

Students interested in applying for the scholarship may do so via Carlowgaa.ie or www.itcarlow.ie/scholarships.

Applicants must be available to their relevant county team(s) for the full duration of their relevant leagues and championship and provide time to assist with coaching or administration of underage squads in Carlow.

The successful scholars will be contacted by Carlow GAA, or Carlow Camogie/LGFA in November.
