Carlow 1-08

Wexford 1-05

Carlow got their Electric Ireland Minor Football Championship campaign off to the perfect start on Saturday afternoon as they edged out Wexford in an enthralling encounter.

Cialan Brady, Cian Ray and Brandon Cassidy kept the Barrowsiders in front in what was a low scoring first half as Wexford refused to relent despite Carlow’s dominance.

Two more frees from Cassidy and a fine score from Cathal Healy gave the home side a small cushion at the interval, Carlow 0-06 to 0-03 Wexford.

Two Ruairi Martin points at the beginning of the second half brought Wexford within a point of their opponents but the key moment in the game came ten minutes into a pulsating second half as Cillian Moore completed a well-worked team goal to give his team a 1-06 to 0-05 lead.

There was more drama however, as Dean Hills responded with the Yellowbellies’ only goal of the game to reduce the deficit to a single point yet again.

Thankfully for Carlow that did not change the momentum of the game as Shane Duffy and Cian Gorman Comerford wrapped up a deserved victory with the final scores of an intense affair at Netwatch Cullen Park.

Next up for Carlow is a trip to Wicklow to face the Orchard County on 20 April.
