Carlow Rugby Club will have a new coach for the 2019-20 season.
Following former coach Steve Ashmore’s decision to take time out from the game the Carlow Executive has appointed 28 year old Corey Carty as his successor.
Despite his young age, Wexford based Corey Carty already has significant coaching experience.
For the past three years he has been Head Coach at Carlow IT and assistant coach with Enniscorthy Rugby Club which recently won the Towns Cup and gained promotion to the All Ireland League.
Corey studied the Rugby Degree at Carlow IT and actually played winger/centre with Carlow in the 2008-09 season.
“When I was 21 I tried coaching during a period of injury from the game, Since then I have caught the coaching bug and want to make it my profession” said Corey who has played with the Leinster’s Provincial Junior side.
Corey’s day job is as Leinster CCRO (Club Community Rugby Officer) with Wexford Wanderers. His mother Debbie Carty is also deeply involved in the administration of rugby and was recently selected to represent the South East Region of Leinster Rugby where she is in line to become President of Leinster Rugby in two years time.
The new Carlow coach is currently making contact with Carlow Captain for 2019-20, Ritchie Whyte, and players, with the view to starting new season’s training probably in late July.
Under the previous coaching team of Steve Ashmore and Steve Gray Carlow Rugby gained promotion from Division 2A to 1B of the Leinster League. They finished the 2018-19 season in fourth place of Division 1B.
Meanwhile at the Carlow Rugby Club AGM, held last week, outgoing Club President Michael Carbery, handed over the presidential mantle to new President Edel Gibbons from Castledermot. Edel becomes only the second ever lady president in the Club’s 144 year history. Twelve years ago the post was held by Maureen Gordon from Rutland.
At last week’s AGM Tom Crotty from Carlow town was promoted as President Elect for the 2020-21 season and he in turn nominated Carlow Director of rugby Derek Cope, also from Castledermot, as Junior President Elect for the 2001-02 season.
