There was heartbreak for IT Carlow on Tuesday night after a titanic battle with UCD saw the hosts go down by a single point to UCD in the Fitzgibbon Cup Quarter Finals 1-17 to 1-16 after extra time.

The game was played in terrible wet and windy conditions with Carlow with the wind in their backs in the second half.

UCD got a few early points with the wind behind them and lead 4 points to 1 after 12 minutes.

Carlow managed to find the back of the net before half time and went in at the break four points down 1-01 to 0-08.

After the break they knocked over three points unanswered and then managed to get their nose in front by a point with ten minutes to go.

Waterfords Colin Dunford was red carded on the 57 minute mark putting huge pressure on the local side.

However UCD kept up the fight and both teams were level deep into injury time with the game then going to extra time.

At half time in extra time Carlow trailed 0-16 to 1-11.

IT Carlow got a penalty in extra time however UCD found the net on 75 minutes.

Carlow pulled back three points but the final whistle beat them.
