“I’m just loving it” O’Loughlins Gaels star Fionan Mackessey adjusts to life in Kilkenny

Fionan Mackessey is hard to miss. But it’s not just his towering presence that’s making waves in Kilkenny hurling; it’s his exceptional talent and rapid adjustment to life with O’Loughlin Gaels.

The Kerryman, who recently defended his All-Ireland Poc Fada title on the rugged Cooley mountains, has quickly become an integral part of the Leinster champions as they seek to defend their county title.

Mackessey, originally from St. Brendan’s Hurling Club in Kerry, is no stranger to making an impact on new stages. Kerry hurlers are known for their grit and determination, and Fionan epitomizes this, bringing a fresh and formidable presence to Kilkenny, a county steeped in hurling tradition. Since moving to O’Loughlin Gaels, Mackessey has wasted no time in showcasing his abilities, contributing significantly in his first few outings with the club.

In his debut against Clara, Mackessey grabbed two points, giving a glimpse of what he could bring to the table. However, it was in his most recent performance against Mullinavat that he truly announced his arrival, racking up five points and delivering a blistering display that has left fans and teammates alike excited about what’s to come.

For Mackessey, the move to O’Loughlin Gaels has been a smooth one, thanks in large part to the warm reception he received from the club. “I knew a few lads above in O’Loughlin Gaels, and so I just said I’d go there, and I’m delighted with the decision,” Mackessey shared. “I’m just trying to help them as best I can. Hopefully, we can do as best as we can. For me, I’m just loving it up here, and I just want to excel and try and do as best I can up here.”

The Kerryman’s enthusiasm is palpable, and he is quick to credit his new teammates for making his transition seamless. “It’s unreal because you have unbelievable players all around you, so they make it actually easy for you,” he explained. “They’re so welcoming, they’re a very tight-knit group, so I’m delighted I slotted in nicely so far.”

Mackessey’s humility and team-first attitude have already endeared him to the O’Loughlin Gaels faithful, who have long prided themselves on their strong community ethos. But while Mackessey may be modest about his own contributions, it’s clear that he has added a new dimension to the team. His physical presence, combined with his skill and experience, offers O’Loughlin Gaels another formidable weapon as they pursue further success.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how Mackessey continues to adapt and thrive in his new environment. His early performances suggest that he’s more than capable of rising to the challenge, and if his recent form is anything to go by, Kilkenny hurling fans can expect to see a lot more of this Kerryman’s name on the scoresheet.

For now, Fionan Mackessey is just enjoying the ride, embracing the challenges and opportunities that come with playing for one of Kilkenny’s top clubs. “They make it easy for you because there’s unbelievable players all around you, so it’s just brilliant, and I’m just loving it,” he said, with a smile that suggests he’s exactly where he wants to be.

As O’Loughlin Gaels set their sights on defending their county title, they’ll count on Mackessey’s blend of power, precision, and passion to help lead the charge. And if his early performances are any indication, the Kerryman’s influence could be pivotal in bringing further glory to the Kilkenny champions.
