The dust has settled and we can look back at the incredible final victory for Freebooters last weekend. The Kilkenny side defeated St. Kevin’s boys for the second year in a row, to be crowned Leinster Champions on Sunday in the AUL grounds.
Freebooters were coming from a semi final extra time victory over Leixlip United, while St. Kevins progressed after meeting Carlow side Hannover Harps in the other fixture.
The game was always going to be a tense affair, with the two sides knowing each other well. The Dublin side initially took the lead before the Blues pulled back a mere three minutes later with Zac Hammond getting himself on the scoresheet, and it would not be the last time in the game he did so.
With about 20 minutes to go ‘Booters took the lead, once again with Hammond hitting the back of the net. A victory was in their grasp, however late goals for North End United two weeks before denied Freebooters their fourth Leinster Junior Cup, and surely this played on the minds of the youth side.
What followed was a relentless final ten minutes, as the lead was extended by a further three. Goals came from Cian Dunne, Jack Conally and Zac Hammond securing his hatrick and Man of The Match.
An amazing achievement by the young side, who will now get their first competitive taste of Junior football this coming weekend. Freebooters have entered a C team into the second division of the Kilkenny District League and its widely expected that the team will comprise of this Leinster winning side. Highview Athletic B team is what awaits them at two o’clock on Sunday while both their A & B teams will be in Maher Shield action.
