At the Kilkenny County Board meeting on Monday night, pivotal decisions were made regarding age-grade adjustments in club competitions for the year 2024.
The board opted to introduce new categories for Under 14, Under 16, Under 18, and Under 21 competitions. Additionally, a significant development permits Under 18 players to participate in adult teams for their respective clubs.
This decision marks a departure from the previous grading system that included Under 13, Under 15, Under 17, Under 19, and Under 21 levels. The adjustments are expected to provide a more streamlined and competitive structure for young athletes within the Kilkenny GAA community.
In tandem with these changes, the Kilkenny GAA Corporate Plan for the years 2024-2030 was unveiled at UPMC Nowlan Park during the same meeting. Spearheaded by Phil Hogan, the plan outlines key areas crucial for the future success of Kilkenny GAA.
The identified focus areas include:
- Supporting a ‘Player First’ Mindset: Emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the well-being and development of players within the Kilkenny GAA framework.
- Harnessing the Power of the School-Club Dynamic: Recognizing the synergy between schools and clubs in nurturing talent and fostering a collaborative approach for the betterment of the sport.
- Establishing the Kilkenny GAA Academy: Introducing a structured academy system to provide specialized coaching and development opportunities for emerging talent.
- Embracing Integration as the Pathway Forward: Promoting cohesion and collaboration at all levels of the organization to ensure a unified approach to GAA development in the region.
The launch of this comprehensive corporate plan signals a strategic vision for the future, with a commitment to investing approximately €10 million over the next five years. This significant financial allocation is earmarked for the improvement of facilities, coaching programs, and pitches to elevate the overall standard of Gaelic games in Kilkenny.
The ambitious plan reflects a proactive approach by the Kilkenny County Board to sustain and enhance the region’s rich sporting heritage.
