Kilkenny return to rugby action in the Leinster league this weekend with a road trip to Ashbourne and while the local side were flying in Division 1B last season, their promotion to Division 1A has left them with 1 win in 3 so far this season.

Michael O’Leary spoke to Kilkenny’s Packie Hennebry, a man who knows life in Division 1A with Kilkenny only two well having managed the side on their last top-tier stint.

“It’s a real big step up, you know? We knew it wouldn’t be easy. Every game in this league is like a cup final because the teams are so good and we’re probably finding it a little bit tougher as regards Division 1 B; it was easier to find a bit of space and easier, maybe, to get the breaks. It’s very, very tough up at the top here now”

“You really, really have to have a squad of 22, 23 players that can compete. We’re struggling a little bit with injuries as well and we’re waiting on a lot of the hurlers to come back as well until maybe around now, hopefully those lads will be back in the next couple of weeks.”

We’ll be looking ahead to the full weekend of rugby action tomorrow with Kilkenny, Tullow and Carlow all back in action.

Listen below to Michael’s full chat with Packie Hennebry.
