2012 was a huge year for hurling.
Galway had won the Leinster hurling championship and were into their first All-Ireland senior hurling final since 2005. Kilkenny were into the final for the seventh year in a row, having seen off Tipperary in 2011 and coming through the back door for 2012 after losing said Leinster final to Galway. Joe Canning was going in search of a first All-Ireland medal while Henry Shefflin was looking to add an unprecedented ninth to his collection.
At the first time of asking, it was a draw game. Sunday 9 September saw the two sides play out a closely fought contest, Joe Canning picking up 1-09, Henry Shefflin picking up 0-12 as the final score hit Kilkenny 0-19 Galway 2-13 setting up a second day out in Croke Park.
In the replay, Kilkenny made two changes, Walter Walsh making a debut at the All-Ireland final stage, picking up 1-03 for his efforts while further goals from Richie Power, Colin Fennelly and a 9 point haul from Henry Shefflin helped the Cats to an 11 point winning margin.
A brace of goals from Galway’s David Burke with a third from Jonathan Glynn along with 9 points from Joe Canning weren’t enough in the end, Kilkenny running out 3-22 to 3-11 winners.
