Mayo defender Oisín Mullin has officially moved to AFL club Geelong.
The young Mayo star will join the club as a category B rookie.
There had been widespread reports that Mullin would make the move from Gaelic football to Aussie Rules for several years and the move will be worrying for Mayo manager James Horan with preparations well underway for the upcoming 2022 season.
The Kilmaine clubman follows in the footsteps of Irish players Mark O’Connor, Zach Tuohy and Rachel Kearns who have all made the move to Geelong.
“Oisin is a very athletic and talented prospect, and we are thrilled he has chosen to join the Cats as he transitions to AFL,” Geelong’s recruiting and list manager Stephen Wells said after the news was confirmed.
“Oisin has already established himself as an elite player in the GAA, and it is a big step to make the move to Australia. We have a strong plan in place around his development and transition to football.”
The news of Mullin’s departure comes in a week in which Mayo were forced to make alternative arrangements for their 2022 home games due to work being done on McHale Park.
