It’s time to listen to it.

Michael Fennelly’s words on his body prompting him towards inter-county retirement after 12 years with the Kilkenny senior hurling setup.

The Ballyhale Shamrocks clubman, 2009 senior captain and 8-time All-Ireland winner with Kilkenny announced his retirement from the inter-county game through a statement issued via the Gaelic Players Association on Friday afternoon.

“In a nutshell, I’ve had 12 years playing for Kilkenny”, said Fennelly in speaking with Edward Hayden on Saturday morning.

“If I could get another 12 years I would, or squeeze out a couple more but my body is telling me at this stage that it’s time to hang up the boots – and it’s time to listen to it, I think. This year in particular was tough.”

“In terms of the Waterford game, I came out with nearly three injuries in that game and it’s probably due to the intensity of the game; training, not training enough and getting the right load in training sessions to get ready for those games.”

“I’m fighting a monster of a battle ever time, fighting my own body every time. I was hoping to get some time with the club, get a good run, training, get ready for 2018 but that went completely pear-shaped.”
